Environment at Roadford

Roadford Lake is situated in the stunning surroundings of the Wolf Valley, with a range of natural habitats on its shores including Culm Grasslands, woodlands, old pastures and orchards. Dormice, bats and buzzards are just some of the species that make this environment humming with wildlife. Our Nature Reserve is very peaceful with a bird hide, perfectly situated for bird lovers to sit and watch the many species at Roadford and the flora and fauna, in abundance, is cared for through the conservation work carried out by South West Lakes Trust.

Activities at Roadford

The 730 acre lake provides a range of on-water activity including hire, launch and tuition in sports such as windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and stand-up-paddle boarding as well as rainbow trout fishing. On land an extensive network of footpaths and cycle trails provide access to different areas around the lake including a walk and cycle route across the dam to the Activity Centre, which also offers a great lakeside campsite. A short walk from the café and venue, features to explore include a cob shelter and 6 metre tall steel sundial, created as a gift from Devon to Her Majesty the Queen for her Diamond Jubilee, while further afield you’ll find woodland walks and a bird hide. Roadford Lake is also a reservoir, operated by South West Water for the supply of water across Devon and Cornwall.

South West Lakes Trust

South West Lakes Trust is the region’s largest combined conservation and recreation charity, providing public access, education, recreation and conservation at over 40 inland waters across Devon, Cornwall and West Somerset. The Trust, which was established in April 2000, provides a range of opportunities for people to explore and get active in the countryside or on-water and manages extensive land holdings to enhance the environment and habitats for our wildlife. Profits from the Trusts trading activities, which includes the café and venue at Roadford Lake, as well as fisheries and activity centres at several other lakes, helps support our charitable work across the region
